Leeds United’s unbeaten start to the Premier League campaign came to an agonising end. United were defeated by the reigning champions, Arsenal, 2-1 at the Emirates.
Before the game, I said that whilst it is likely we will walk away from the game empty-handed when it comes to points, it would be nice to see us compete with Arsenal for a spell during the game and make them earn a positive result.
We certainly did that today. For an hour or so, we were the better side. After James Justin put us a goal up in the 55th minute, Mikel Arteta’s side could not have any complaints.
James Trafford will have been frustrated to let Riccardo Calafiori’s relatively tame effort squirm past him in the 62nd minute to equalise. But for the goal we conceded to substitute Bruno Guimaraes in the 70th minute, there’s absolutely nothing we could’ve done.
It was an excellent team move that was finished off spectacularly by the Brazilian midfielder. Speaking after the game, Arsenal legend Martin Keown was full of praise for the performance United put in against his former side.
Martin Keown was very complimentary of Leeds
Whilst on punditry duties for TNT Sports, Keown highlighted at half-time how Leeds’ wing-backs were causing Arsenal all sorts of trouble.
Noah Okafor was occupying Ben White, as the Swiss winger tucked inside. This allowed Gabriel Gudmundsson all the space in the world when the Swedish international would stretch the pitch.
And it was down the left-hand side that our goal was created in the second half. Gudmundsson’s low cross was thrashed home emphatically by Justin.
But despite Arsenal turning the game round and winning 2-1, Keown was still full of praise for the Whites’ efforts at the Emirates.
“Credit to Leeds, I thought they were outstanding,” Keown said.
“(They were) compact, good in the duels and tenacious.
“The system was causing Arsenal all sorts of problems.”
Former Chelsea winger Joe Cole also backed up Keown’s point at full-time.
“Leeds were the better team for 65 minutes, make no bones about it,” Cole said.
Gabriel Gudmundsson was incredible for Leeds today
As Keown correctly pointed out at half-time, Gudmundsson and Okafor were causing all sorts of problems for Arsenal today.
As well as managing to get an assist, Gudmundsson managed to keep Bukayo Saka relatively quiet for the vast majority of the game.
During today’s clash, the English winger failed to complete a single dribble.
Gudmundsson created two big chances and had four defensive contributions to his name. He was up and down that left flank all afternoon. (Sofascore)
In the end, Gudmundsson and the rest of his teammates will be gutted they couldn’t pick up at least a point today. Their performance certainly warranted that.
However, there’s a great amount of pride we can take from that performance against Arsenal as we outplayed one of the best teams in Europe for a sizeable chunk of the game.
