Manchester United's decision to sell Scott McTominay is back under the microscope as speculation surrounds future at Napoli. The midfielder has been linked with a return to the Premier League - with Real Madrid now said to be enquiring about his availability.
McTominay departed United in the summer of 2024 to join Napoli in a permanent transfer worth £25.9million (€30.5million). The Scotland international has since become a crucial figure in midfield for the Italian outfit.
He played a key role as Napoli secured the Serie A title in his first season in Naples, with the club finishing runners-up to Inter Milan last term. Despite appearing content and continuing to be a vital player for Napoli, rumours surrounding McTominay's future have sparked suggestions of a possible exit in the coming months.
McTominay is understood to be embroiled in a contract stand-off with Napoli, raising the prospect of a January departure if the two sides fail to reach an agreement.
Italian publication Tutto Mercato suggests there is 'danger' that an exit 'could become more and more concrete.' Real Madrid are reported to have made enquiries to assess the situation, while additional interest could emerge from the Premier League.
Napoli are believed to be eager to postpone any potential sale until the summer, but it remains unclear whether they can retain McTominay when the transfer window reopens in January.
Reports have suggested that McTominay is 'open' to the prospect of making a return to the Premier League.
The midfielder spent 22 years at Old Trafford having come through Manchester United's youth system.
Meanwhile, Sky Sports previously reported that United had 'enquired' about the possibility of bringing McTominay back to the club, with Aston Villa also understood to be keen.
The report added that the midfielder's representatives remain in dialogue with 'several' Premier League sides, though it is not clear whether United are amongst them.
Should McTominay depart Napoli for another club in the coming months, United stand to gain financially, as long as the switch is not a return to Old Trafford.

The club secured a sell-on clause as part of the midfielder's move to Italy in 2024.
Under the terms of that deal, United are due 10% of any future transfer fee. That could result in a substantial windfall, with the 29-year-old having boosted his standing through his displays for club and country in recent seasons.
