Die Folgen: Bayern’s 2-2 draw with Augsburg (Bavarian Football Works)

Bayern Munich made the short trek to play FC Augsburg and might have gotten a little more than it bargained for against a very tough home side.

Manuel Baum’s group made Bayern Munich work for everything in a rough-and-tumble brawl between the two Bavarian clubs. In the end, the both sides fought to a 2-2 draw that will leave Bayern Munich feeling like it left points on the pitch.

Let’s dive into the details, here are some quick hitters on the match:

As always, let’s begin with a look at Vincent Kompany’s starting XI:

Bayern Munich went with its standard starting XI, with the exception of Jamal Musiala (injured) and Konrad Laimer (paternity leave — at least for this game). Ismael Saibari got the nod as the attacking midfielder, and Josip Stanišić started at right-back.

Seconds into the match (literally), Bayern Munich gave up a goal. On the opening kickoff, the ball was played back to Manuel Neuer, who took a very big touch. Neuer desperately tried to get to the ball, but his clearance attempt hit Robin Fellhauer, who charged forward, gathered the ball, and put the home side up 1-0. Whoa. After just 8.4 seconds, there was a new Bundesliga record.

FC Augsburg was on fire and aggressive to start. As a reminder, this is a pretty good team.

Harry Kane had a look in the 9th minute, but skied his attempt far over the crossbar. Michael Olise took a shot in the 13th minute, which was saved, and seconds later Kane sent a header over the crossbar. Bayern Munich was putting pressure on FC Augsburg, but was having trouble breaking through. This would become a theme.

In the 16th minute, Alphonso Davies fired one high, too, and fans had to be wondering if this was going to be one of those days (Spoiler Alert: It was!).

What was amazing about this game was not Bayern Munich’s resolve, but FC Augsburg having absolutely no fear. Manuel Baum has done an incredible job with this group.

There was no mistaking it, FC Augsburg was going to be very physical with Kane. They were manhandling him at every opportunity. Expect this to become the norm. Yes, Kane always deals with physical play, but this was heightened.

It was actually impressive to see the level of effort that FC Augsburg put into defending. For a team that was open about its plans to shutdown Olise and Kane, Baum’s side was doing a terrific job of making good on its strategy.

Luis Díaz was a non-factor in the first half, but he did improve in the second half. That was a good sign of progress.

Just before halftime, Kane had a golden opportunity to knot the match, but sent his close-range attempt off the crossbar.

Bayern Munich’s summer acquisitions of Ismael Saibari and Nathaniel Brown both appear to have hit a wall, but did end up scoring second half goals. Each player had a bigger workload than ever heading into this season, but the early performances in Bavaria showed great promise.

With Brown, he could end up the benefactor of a very shaky right-back situation on the squad.

If there was ever a player who needed a goal, it was Díaz, who appeared to have tied the game. Of course, this writer would have loved to see it, but Fandango crashed (things were going way too smoothly). And also, the goal got waved off.

By the time the feed came back, we missed Díaz’s goal called offside by VAR and also Saibari finally putting Bayern Munich on the scoreboard.

FC Augsburg would not wait long to respond, though. Rodrigo Ribeiro banged home a rebound for a 2-1 lead just nine minutes after Saibari’s goal. The Ribeiro goal was a product of faulty defending by just about everyone on the backline and lousy goalkeeping from Neuer. Yikes.

There is no other way to couch this, Stanišić is not good right now (and it is possible we have already seen the best that he can be).

In what was really the theme for the day, Olise airmailed an attempt in the 70th minute.

All of a sudden, Bayern Munich was trailing 2-1 and needed to make something happen. Again, though, Bayern’s own mistakes were taking a toll as Kane went offside as he passed to Serge Gnabry, whose goal was disallowed. Minutes later, Davies went offside to kill another would-be goal.

Simply put, Bayern Munich was killing itself with mistakes.

In the 79th minute, Bayern Munich was getting more desperate and played with an increased sense of urgency. A cross was whipped in toward Kane, whose shot was stopped by Dahmen.

Moments after Neuer stopped a blast from Arijon Ibrahimović, Bayern Munich would knot the game. Kane placed a ball across the box, which found Brown, who entered the game as a sub, and scored. Brown snuck in behind Hennes Behrens from the right-back position to knot the game.

Gnabry hit the post in the 83rd minute as the Rekordmeister was now clamoring to get a win.

Seconds later, Olise made a great play to free himself, but was a bit too selfish as he fired a bad angle shot that went out for a corner rather than making the pass. It is hard to criticize Olise, but sometimes that kind of play is the difference between a win and a loss during a key moment.

Kompany made his last ditch effort for a win by bringing in Tom Bischof and Lennart Karl in the 87th minute.

Olise ripped a great shot that Dahman saved in the 89th minute as Bayern Munich was doing everything it could to try and get the three points.

Overall, this was not great. The Neuer mistake was a killer, but the team flubbing so many good chances was very disappointing. There is no rest for the weary, though, as the Bavarians will square off with Viking in the Champions League on Tuesday.

Falk says no white smoke for this Pope (Sport Bild’s Christian Falk)

Sport Bild’s Christian Falk is shooting down rumors that Bayern Munich has interest in Newcastle United goalkeeper Nick Pope:

❌ It is NOT TRUE: Newcastle goalkeeper Nick Pope is on Bayern’s list. There was a meeting during the international break at Bayern Munich, and they discussed many names – including Pope’s. However, while the Englishman was on the list, he’s now no longer really considered an option. As we’ve previously discussed on Bayern Insider, there is interest in Finn Dahmen, interest in Bernd Leno, and interest in Marvin Schwäbe. And you can see that these goalkeepers are all German. The first idea would be to get a German goalkeeper in, as historically, it has worked for FC Bayern.

Of course, Jordan Pickford (who we mentioned last week) and Nick Pope are both goalkeepers who would make sense, but Bayern are currently prioritising German goalkeepers. Where you may have some problems is that, as in the case of Dahmen, he’s the No.1 goalkeeper at FC Augsburg. So you have to see if he would be prepared to be the No.2 at Bayern. He’s not saying “no” at the moment. Baumann, the former German No.1 during the World Cup qualifiers, wants to set the record for the most Bundesliga appearances, so he’s not an option at the moment. For Leno, it could be an option for him to return to Germany. He’s a bit older than the other candidates, so it could be interesting. Whoever it is, Bayern needs a player who is willing to accept that Jonas Urbig is the No.1. It’s not so easy to find a player like that who is simultaneously a very good goalkeeper, which is why Bayern have a long list.

Olise will target future in Spain if he leaves Bayern (TEAMtalk)

If Michael Olise does choose to leave Bayern Munich at some point, it appears that his future would be in Spain rather than England:

A move to Spain is currently the only scenario that could prise Michael Olise away from Bayern Munich, with sources close to the France star’s camp telling TEAMtalk that he has little desire to return to the Premier League and with Liverpool firmly put in their place despite recent speculation suggesting a move to Anfield was back on the agenda.

We have been continually told by well-placed sources that Olise is currently very settled in Germany and is not looking to move back to England despite long-standing interest from some of the Premier League’s biggest clubs. Liverpool, Arsenal and Manchester City all retain an interest in the former Crystal Palace star and are aware of the situation surrounding his future.

However, TEAMtalk understands those clubs are also fully aware that Olise currently has little desire to return to the Premier League.

The 24-year-old is instead open to discussions with Bayern over a new contract, with sources confirming that the German champions are prepared to put a hugely lucrative offer on the table in an effort to secure the star’s long-term future. Bayern are ready to offer Olise terms that would put him close to Harry Kane’s prospective new contract, underlining just how highly the club value the 29-cap France international.

TEAMtalk has already revealed that Kane’s new Bayern deal has been agreed in principle and is understood to be worth close to €500,000 a week. We understand Bayern are prepared to offer Olise a package in that region because they believe he is on a par with any attacking midfielder in world football.

The Bundesliga giants are therefore keen to secure Olise’s long-term future, but they are also acutely aware of the interest building around the player, and with sources underlining why only two clubs in the world game could tempt the player away from the Allianz Arena…

And TEAMtalk understands Bayern believe the biggest threat to their hopes of keeping Olise could come from Spain. Real Madrid and Barcelona are both firmly in the picture and have made it clear to Olise’s camp that they would be prepared to make a move if the opportunity arises. Sources close to Olise insist that a move to Spain would be viewed very differently from a return to England and could therefore represent the biggest danger to Bayern.

That puts Real Madrid and Barcelona in a strong position should Olise ultimately decide that he wants a new challenge. For now, though, Olise is open to staying in Munich and engaging with Bayern over a new contract, with the club determined to reward him accordingly.

Paris Saint-Germain have also shown interest in Olise in the past, but TEAMtalk understands they are not currently considering a move for the player.

There are a few months ahead of Bayern Munich’s self-imposed deadline of determining Olise’s future in conjunction with him, but this story does fall in line with previous reports.

One thing is certain — the Olise to Real Madrid rumors will not die with this report.

Kim’s situation to be clarified in coming months (Sport Bild’s Christian Falk)

Kim Min-jae has had a good start to his season and is expected to sort out his future in the next few months:

Bayern Munich are fully aware that Min-jae Kim has a high salary and a high price on the market. Every season, you have to change something in the squad to keep competitive. This is why we’re having this discussion. However, I’m aware that talks have been planned in the Autumn with Min-jae Kim’s camp. There will be talks about the future and so we will see exactly what Bayern Munich are thinking and what they’re offering. In the end, perhaps it could be to establish that if genuine interest arrives, he could be sold. But it could also just as well be that Vincent Kompany is so happy with Kim he’ll get a new contract.

Bayern Munich have a problem, if you can call it that: they have two really good starting centre-backs in Jonathan Tah and Dayot Upamecano. But you see that Min-jae Kim is doing very well this season as a rotational option. In fact, he’s considered another number one option for the starting-XI. As Bayern Munich know, the wage bill is looking quite high. Kim first arrived as the best player in Serie A at the time, as was made clear by the expensive price tag. If you want to have ideas for the future, you have to sell players who carry a significant market value, and ultimately Kim is a player who carries such a market value. You see that clubs like AC Milan are still interested. It wasn’t as concrete as some reports from Italy indicated, but Milan did have an idea in the summer to try and sign the South Korean international.

Kim is in a weird position. He is probably capable of starting for another club that would give him a lucrative contract, but he — allegedly — loves playing for Bayern Munich.

The problem might be that the Bavarians will not be as willing to pay him as much, considering his role has lessened to being the No. 3 center-back.
