Former Liverpool duo Ibrahima Konate and Trent Alexander-Arnold started just their second match alongside each other this season, featuring in a dramatic clash between Real Madrid and Villarreal.
It follows both stars making the controversial switch to the Bernabeu within a year of each other, as the former left the Reds last summer for the Spanish capital after running down his contract towards the end, while the latter had left as a free agent after failing to agree a new contract extension.
The start to life for both at Real Madrid has been mixed so far. Alexander-Arnold's first season was impacted heavily by injuries and a lack of momentum, while his second campaign so far has seen Denzel Dumfries provide a stern test in the right-back ranks.
As for Konate, the 27-year-old has been playing through injury, making seven appearances in La Liga since his arrival, with hopes that he can find form along the way to cement his place in the team.
That half of Liverpool's title-winning defense combined for just the second time this campaign as Jose Mourinho gave them the nod in a slim 1-0 win over Villarreal.
Alexander-Arnold featured for just 52 minutes before he was substituted, with Vinicius Jr coming on in his place, before Real Madrid finally broke the deadlock through Yan Diomande.
Controversy followed, however, as Vinicius Jr thought he doubled his side's lead, only for VAR to spot a hair pull from the Brazilian in the build-up to the goal, disallow it, and then show a red card for violent conduct. It sparked protests from the Real Madrid players, and Mourinho canceled his post-match press conference as a result.

The side hung on to its one-goal lead in the end, with the Spanish media going on to rate the players after the match. Marca rated Alexander-Arnold's performance as a 6.5 out of ten, and reflected: "First half: What a pass he played to Kylian Mbappe, behind the Villarreal center-backs. He didn’t hesitate for a second. He was solid in defense."
Konate received the same rating, with the publication noting, "Solid defensively," before highlighting a few of his actions throughout the game.
AS gave its review of Alexander-Arnold by stating: "The Englishman’s turn in the right-back rotation. A recital of passes and a great long ball to Mbappe in the 21st minute, which the Frenchman couldn’t finish."
Similar was said of Konate, who was praised for his stability at the back, as the report reads: "A solid performance from the Frenchman, who also demonstrated his aerial prowess in attack with a header from deep."
El Desmarque was slightly more critical of the French defender, giving him a six out of ten and claiming: "Generally speaking, the French center back played well, but he failed to show excessive confidence when bringing the ball out from the back, as he also lacked support from his teammates."
While his former Liverpool teammate was given the same score, with the report stating: "The English footballer did not suffer in defense and was able to spread out in attack with continuous long balls with which to try to break through Villarreal's very close lines."
It suggests something to build on for both players, in a performance that could get lost in the noise of the match's controversies.
With a visit to AS Roma next, before clashes with Sevilla and Barcelona in La Liga, the two defenders will be keen to have a major say in some important games.
