Youri Tielemans has to be benched by Manchester United - a shoddy transfer window has led to their early season struggles

That's the opinion of talkSPORT co-host Henry Winter, who has called on Michael Carrick to drop his £35million summer signing.

Six games into the Premier League season, and United have only picked up one win and currently sit 12th in the table, with the club enduring their worst start to a campaign in 40 years.

The miserable start to the term continued on Saturday evening as they drew 1-1 with Tottenham at Old Trafford after Dominic Solanke levelled up the scoring in stoppage time.

Tielemans, who has started in all of United's league games so far this term, was hooked on the hour mark.

Carlos Baleba took his place in midfield and impressed on his debut following his £70m switch from Brighton, with Carrick's side going on to take the lead 15 minutes later through Bryan Mbeumo.

Spurs, who were reduced to ten men following Rodrigo Bentancur's straight red card in the 78th minute, managed to hit back in the end, but there was an upturn in performance after Baleba came on.

And Winter thinks that showed that the Tielemans transfer is not paying off, as he called for him to be dropped for the foreseeable future.

What did Henry Winter say about Man United?

Winter declared he believes United wasted their money on Tielemans and ex-Chelsea midfielder Andrey Santos, who hasn't played a minute in the Premier League since September 6, when they could have signed defenders instead.

"I thought it was really poor... I just thought until Baleba came on, their midfield was too open," he said on talkSPORT's Sunday Edition.

"I still don't understand why they need Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans. Tielemans was getable and a decent name.

"But I think he gets in Bruno Fernandes' way and you need another defensive midfielder alongside Kobbie Mainoo.

"I think he [Tielemans] should be on the bench. I don't think he's got the acceleration, that mobility, awareness to get back and help out, which is not a strength of Fernandes.

"So, effectively, you're just leaving Mainoo to do it.

"Baleba and Mainoo, absolutely, but the money they spent on Santos and Tielemans, I wish they spent on a defender."

United spent over £150m over the summer, but all of their funds were used on bringing in three midfielders.

Santos signed for £50m, Tielemans for £35m and Baleba for £70m, with goalkeeper Karl Darlow joining on a free.

They didn't sign a single defender - and that is now already costing them this season, according to Winter.

Why did Man United sign Tielemans?

Winter went on to discuss Tielemans further, admitting he enjoyed watching him at Leicester City and Aston Villa.

However, he has questioned whether United bringing him in was the correct choice after losing Casemiro.

"I think there was maybe a desire that they saw someone that was a name that was getable, they clearly want to address the midfield this summer," he said.

"But with Casemiro going, you needed more defensive-minded midfielders."

Winter then called for Baleba to now start in Tielemans' place, adding: "Baleba makes sense, I'm surprised he didn't start.

"He has to start. The defence hasn't got much pace in it and he needs to be shielding that defence."

4The Red Devils have failed to win any of their last four league matches since beating Ipswich 5-2

And summing up United's woeful start after a poor window, he concluded: "United fans have been remarkable, staying behind the team.

"But they know it's partly an issue of recruitment, partly an issue of ownership, and partly an issue of targeting midfield when the defence was crying out for help."
