Ibrahima Konate is already walking a disciplinary tightrope at Real Madrid after just seven games, as the defender faces a battle to keep his place in the team under Jose Mourinho.

The 27-year-old has made an early impression with Los Blancos, featuring in the majority of the side's matches so far and earning the manager's trust in a team that has had its challenges in the backline due to injuries.

Making a quick start will have been important for Konate, who will have been expecting regular minutes after moving to the Bernabeu, following on from his surprise exit from Liverpool in the summer.

The alternative is the situation that Trent Alexander-Arnold has found himself in with Real Madrid, as he now battles Denzel Dumfries for a place in the team after a difficult year or so at the club, after leaving the Reds.

While Konate has clearly done enough to start all but one La Liga match for his new side so far, there have been early concerns in his first few months at the club.

That is the Frenchman's disciplinary record. In just seven league matches, the defender has already picked up four yellow cards, with the latest coming against Villarreal.

He may feel hard done by for that specific challenge, which didn't see him connect with the opposition attacker, but it was a caution that now keeps him walking on a tightrope for some time with his yellow cards.

The current La Liga rules state that players will be suspended for one match once they reach a tally of five yellow cards in the season, putting Konate at immediate risk of a ban, as he walks a fine line between imposing his physicality and going too far and getting booked for quite some time.

That makes the defender a selection risk for Mourinho, causing the manager some headaches when picking his team for upcoming matches.

The threat of suspension comes at a key time, too, with a match against Sevilla next in the league, which will challenge Real Madrid, before an El Clásico encounter with Barcelona.

Should Konate pick up a yellow card next time out, he will rule himself out of contention for that big rivalry clash. If he is dropped for either, it could create an early challenge in earning the manager's trust if another defender comes in and impresses.

It remains to be seen how the scenario will play out, with the former Liverpool man already well on his way to beating his own league tally for yellow cards, which stands at 7 for Liverpool in the 2025/26 Premier League campaign and RB Leipzig in the 2018/19 Bundesliga season.

Before then, Real Madrid has Champions League action against AS Roma, as Mourinho and his team look to pick up some momentum for the week ahead.

It all sets up an intriguing time at the Bernabeu, with drama at every turn, as Konate faces a challenging few games ahead to keep himself available for contention.
