Nick Woltemade's Juventus loan takes twist just four games into loan away from Newcastle

The Nick Woltemade case is a rather curious one. No one can doubt the German's talent and potential – and he showed glimpses of it during his time at Newcastle United – but it's unclear what his future holds.

Hopes were high when he joined the Magpies for £69m in the summer of 2025. He delivered the goods instantly, with seven goals scored in his opening 13 matches. However, his form then dipped, and he would find the back of the net just four more times across his debut season in England.

Still just 24, 11 goals and six assists isn't bad for a young striker but Newcastle clearly weren't convinced as he was then shipped on loan to Juventus for the 2026/27 season. Just four games into his spell in Italy, though, things have taken another worrying turn.

Unlike Curtis Jones, who has hit the ground running at Inter Milan, the early signs for Woltemade at Juventus have not been positive. After just two appearances for the Italian giants, the local press were not impressed. Gazzetta dello Sport swiftly stated that he 'lacks sharpness and gets everything wrong', while adding that he has 'clearly struggled to integrate into the team's dynamics.'

As of October, the German has now played a total of three Serie A games, failing to score or get an assist. He also has one Europa League appearance, scoring a penalty in a 5-0 thrashing of Dutch side NEC Nijmegen.

His poor form carried into the international break as he was criticised for missing a big chance in Germany’s 2-0 win over Serbia and was then benched by Jurgen Klopp for the next match, playing just 27 minutes in a 0-0 draw with Greece

A slow start is one thing, but in a real twist it seems Juventus are seriously beginning to regret the move. As reported by Gazzetta dello Sport, Woltemade's loan club are so unimpressed with Woltemade that they are now working on bringing in alternatives this winter.

Three names were mentioned in the report. US and Monaco striker Folarin Balogun was mentioned along with Frosinone’s Antonio Raimondo. Mateo Retegui, who used to be at Atalanta but now plays for Saudi side Al-Qadsiah, was the other touted option.

Gazzetta dello Sport note how his performances with Germany over the past few weeks haven't helped:

If Juventus were to bring in one of Balogun, Raimondo, or Retegui, and look to offload Woltemade, it could be very bad news for the 24-year-old. As reported by TalkSport, under regulations on international transfers, a player can change clubs up to three times in the course of a full season, but can only play for two of them.

Woltemade has obviously played for Juve this term, but he also made two appearances for Newcastle before being sent out on loan. As such, he cannot play for another team across the remainder of 2026/27.

Consequently, he has two options. He can either try and fight for his place in Italy – although he could be surplus to requirements by January – or he could return to England early, but new Magpies boss Matthias Jaissle doesn't seem to rate him.

Either way, it's not looking too good for the tall German. Still, with the best part of three months to go until the winter market opens, perhaps Woltemade can find his feet in Serie A and prove his doubters wrong.
