The Premier League has been urged to 'act' and confirm the punishment for Manchester City to prevent this year's campaign from descending into a farce.

‌

‌

During the international break, the Premier League confirmed an independent commission had found the Manchester club guilty of all charges related to serious breaches of the league's financial rules, as well as the majority of charges relating to its failure to cooperate with the investigation.

‌

Sunday's clash at Anfield was City's first outing since the verdict was issued and an appeal was lodged. As a result, a cloud of uncertainty hangs over the league, with questions surrounding the title race and the ramifications of any potential sanctions.

That sentiment was heightened further as City extended its winning run with a 3-0 win over Liverpool. It was far from comfortable for Enzo Maresca's side as the Reds looked the better team for long periods, despite the number of key players absent through injury, but the game ultimately shifted as a result of a controversial refereeing decision in the second half.

Ryan Gravenberch was shown a soft second yellow card and was given his marching orders as a result. Liverpool failed to recover from that point onward, and three goals inflicted a bitter defeat on Andoni Iraola 's men.

City continues to lead the way in the title race, with Arsenal close behind. However, as the rest of the league awaits the outcome of the appeal and any potential sanctions, the Premier League faces the prospect of City winning another league title in the meantime.

‌

TV personality Piers Morgan called the possibility a 'farce' and urged the Premier League to do something. "They need to act as soon as possible and announce City’s punishment," he wrote on social media platform X. "This cannot go on.

"This is a total farce. Manchester City players, and fans, celebrating wildly like nothing has happened - despite the club being exposed as the worst cheats in football history.

"What happens if they win the title again this season? That could ruin the Premier League."

It is, of course, a very real possibility as City is yet to lose a game across any competition this season. The club sits top of the league table with 18 points, followed by current champion Arsenal on 15.

City faces the difficult challenge of European champion Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League midweek, which will be followed by the visit of Ipswich Town. Meetings with Aston Villa and Brighton are to come before the end of the month.
