A dejected David Moyes felt his Everton squad had completely underperformed in the 2-2 Premier League draw against Hull City, calling his side's display 'poor' at the MKM Stadium.

City forward Joe Gelhardt opened the scoring in the 48th minute following an error by Ainsley Maitland-Niles, but Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall equalised for Everton seven minutes later.

Thierno Barry, who had squandered plenty of earlier chances, then put the visitors ahead midway through the second period from a poor Sorba Thomas free-kick, though the hosts responded swiftly and levelled when substitute Mo Belloumi fired past Jordan Pickford in the 74th minute.

Change is afoot at Everton after it was announced earlier in the week that the club would be put up for sale, but their manager was in no mood for excuses after the draw, though the result saw them remain unbeaten.

“I’m really disappointed that we didn’t come away with three points, I couldn’t see them getting a goal when we went 2-1 up – I thought if anything we would go on and finish it," Moyes said. "It looked really unlike us, the way we gave the goals away, it was very, very poor.

Hull have had some great results here against Manchester United and Villa; they’re not easy to beat, and they weren’t (on Sunday), but I thought we should have gone on and won the game comfortably. The overall performance from everyone was so far below our level, way below where we should be.

“I’m not giving the players any room for excuses because of what’s going on, whether that be the transfer window or that be ownership.”

Dewsbury-Hall was praised by Moyes for his efforts, however, and despite his blunders, Barry was acknowledged for eventually finding the back of the net, after what will go down as one of the misses of the season saw him pass up a gilt-edged chance earlier in the second period.

“I thought that (below par performance) showed in so many of our players, but Kiernan was the one who got us the goal and obviously made the assist for Thierno. We didn’t play well enough; we might have ended up winning the game with not a great performance, but the goals we conceded were naive to say the least. You need to be more clinical, and we’ve not been, but that’s not a full-on criticism of Thierno Barry because he’s got his goal.”

On Brennan Johnson's goal in the first half, which was eventually ruled out because of offside, Moyes admitted the former Nottingham Forest man was just off.

“Yeah, subjective offside, I think is the word. Which I don’t know what that actually means. But I’m trying to be pretty straight as much as I can. You know, we had a goal rolled off last week again against Ipswich the last time we played. He may well just be offside, Brennan. But I’d like to see the lines drawn just to see exactly if they’ve got it right.

“So, I’m hoping that the people who’ve done it, have done that and got the job right because there’s a chance that the goalkeeper’s heel could be playing him onside. But on just a quick picture I saw, 10 minutes ago, my feeling is it’s probably just offside. I don’t know what subjective offside is, and I don’t think any of you do either.”
