Sunderland’s European results can have a longer-term benefit beyond the immediate UEFA prize money on offer.
Sunderland already know the immediate financial value of winning in the Europa League, but victories can also help the club build something potentially valuable for future European campaigns.
Each league-phase victory is worth approximately £381,000 under UEFA’s 2026/27 distribution model, while a draw brings around £127,000. There is another system operating alongside those payments: UEFA’s club coefficient.

From the league phase onwards, clubs receive two coefficient points for a victory and one for a draw. Final league position can also generate bonus points, with the Europa League’s first-placed club receiving six and the amount decreasing by 0.25 for each position down to 24th. Progress through the knockout stages can add further points.

There is an important caveat for Sunderland. Europa League participants are guaranteed a minimum of three coefficient points from the league phase even if their results would otherwise produce fewer. Sunderland’s victory over AZ Alkmaar therefore produced two match points but, by itself, did not take them beyond that guaranteed three-point floor. Further positive results would begin pushing their match total higher.

Why does that matter?
UEFA uses a club’s coefficient across five seasons when determining rankings used for future European seeding. A separate calculation covering 10 seasons is used for revenue-distribution purposes.

That means Sunderland’s performances this season can begin building their own European record after more than five decades away from continental competition. It will not increase Sunderland’s coefficient-based revenue payment for this season, because the 2026/27 rankings were fixed using results up to the end of 2025/26. But success now can feed into the calculations used in future campaigns.
