Derby County haven't had the most ideal start to the 2026/27 campaign, but as John Eustace prepares his side for the next block of games, the Rams head coach will be hoping for the continued impact of one of his summer signings.
It's been a difficult period for Derby, who, after a tricky summer window, have won just one of their opening nine league games, with a late Ollie Rathbone goal in their 1-1 draw with Wrexham denying them their first home win of the season.
The collapsed takeover from Turki Alalshikh disrupted transfer plans, and though Eustace will likely be pleased by the additions of the likes of Alex Mowatt, Ben Brereton Diaz, Sammie Szmodics, and David Ozoh in the end, it was certainly not smooth sailing for the Rams.
Brereton Diaz and Ozoh both arrived extremely late in the window, as Derby ended up ultimately missing out on one of their key summer targets to a division rival.

The transfer domino effect was in full swing on deadline day, as after Sorba Thomas' move from Stoke City to Hull City was completed, it allowed Canadian winger Liam Millar to head out on loan, with numerous Championship clubs interested.
Derby were one of those, but ultimately, the 27-year-old opted to join Birmingham City instead, where he has enjoyed an excellent start to life in the Second City under a new lease of life.
Millar has scored once and assisted three in just five league games under Chris Davies thus far, and following his move to St Andrews, this allowed Derby to move in for a former Blues target instead.

Despite missing out on Millar, Derby were still steadfast in their ambition to sign another forward before the deadline.
Birmingham had been interested in bringing in Ghanaian forward Mohammed Fuseini on loan from Belgian outfit Union Saint-Gilloise, with a deal between the two clubs having been close.
BirminghamLive reported that the Blues pulled the plug on the deal after opting to sign Millar instead, but Fuseini would be heading to the Championship regardless, with Derby agreeing to bring the 24-year-old to Pride Park for the season.

Since confirming his switch to Derby, Fuseini has impressed, scoring one and assisting one in five league games so far.
The Ghanaian netted a late equaliser away to Burnley just before the beginning of the three-week international break to rescue his side a point, and against Wrexham in Derby's most recent game, he provided the assist to Szomdics' rasping effort in the ninth minute.

The pacy forward has an option-to-buy clause inserted in his deal that took him to Derby, and if he can continue to impress, it would be no surprise if the Rams announce their intentions to bring him to the club permanently.
Whilst Millar has impressed with Birmingham, Fuseini has caught the eye with Derby, and if he can continue to impress in the final third under Eustace, the Blues may come to regret their decision to turn their nose up at the 24-year-old.
John Eustace will be hoping for continued Mohammed Fuseini form to become the envy of Birmingham City

With Fuseini grabbing a goal and an assist in five Championship games, three of which were starts, he has started brightly since his switch to England.
If he can continue his solid form and improve upon his game, Derby may just well have a bargain on their hands, and could very quickly become the envy of Birmingham, who rejected the chance to sign him.
Eustace, on a personal level, will need Fuseini to continue to perform at a high level if he wants to keep his job after just one win in nine, and with another tough run of fixtures ahead, the 46-year-old will be looking to the Ghanaian to help to get him out of trouble.
