Tottenham receive bad news ahead of must-win clash against Coventry City

Bharad Thirumalai

Tottenham Hotspur’s home match against Coventry City suddenly does not look as easy on paper as it did 24 hours ago.

Spurs fans will be hoping that coming back to level the scores at Old Trafford after being reduced to 10 men will prove a turning point in their club’s season.

Roberto De Zerbi’s side produced another dominant performance on Saturday, but we were let down yet again by some wasteful finishing in the first half.

The Spurs boss is confident that the floodgates will soon open for his side in front of goal, given the chances that the Lilywhites are creating consistently.

He said following the 1-1 draw at United: “I believe, in football, if you create chance, chance, chance to score. If you work well, if you work seriously, and if you have qualities of the players, because qualities of the players are clear.

“I think at the end we’re gonna win many games, and we’re gonna score many goals. If we lose passion, if we lose energy, if we lose because we are not winning, we can’t make the step to find the higher level.”

Last season’s Championship winners have struggled in the Premier League until this weekend, but they showcased on Sunday that they have the firepower in attack to hurt teams.

Coventry put four past a hapless Newcastle side at home, with their 4-1 win over the Magpies seeing them climb out of the drop zone and Tottenham drop to 19th.

Given that Spurs’ defence has looked shaky this season, Frank Lampard’s men may fancy their chances of scoring a goal or two at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Spurs squad will fly to Marbella to recharge and bond

Tottenham now have a nine-day break before they take to the field again against the newly promoted side.

The Spurs squad will fly to Marbella for a warm-weather training camp before flying back to London over the weekend.

De Zerbi admits he wants to use the camp as a bonding exercise to bring the squad together off the pitch.

When asked about the purpose of flying to Spain for the training camp, the Tottenham boss said: “To stay together, yes. To work together, to stay together, to go for dinner together, to know better each other, because to be a team you have to know your teammates, and to stay together.”

‘Verbally we agreed’ – Shakhtar Donetsk expect Manor Solomon compensation from Tottenham

Bharad Thirumalai

Tue 13 October 2026 17:00, UK

Shakhtar Donetsk chief executive Sergei Palkin has revealed what Tottenham Hotspur verbally agreed regarding Manor Solomon, who left the Lilywhites to join West Ham in the summer.

Following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, a FIFA ruling allowed foreign players at clubs in both countries to suspend their contracts immediately.

Spurs were thus able to secure Solomon on a free transfer in the summer of 2023, even though the Ukrainian club had spent £5.5m to sign him from Maccabi Petah Tikva in January 2019.

The winger only played six times for Tottenham across his three-year spell at the club, partly down to his injury issues, with the Israeli international sealing a £5m move (plus £2m in add-ons) to West Ham in the recent window.

Shakhtar Donetsk chief expects Tottenham to pay compensation following Manor Solomon’s departure

After the winger’s move to Spurs, the Shakhtar hierarchy reportedly met with Tottenham to seek a small fee for Solomon.

The Ukrainian club’s chief executive Sergei Palkin has now shared that during those discussions, the Premier League side agreed to pay compensation to Shakhtar when Solomon finally departed the club.

Speaking about the 27-year-old winger, Palkin told BBC Sport: “We had arguments and discussions with Tottenham. Verbally, we agreed that when they sell the player, they will pay us part of the sale.

“Now we will come to them officially with our suggestions and our view of the situation. If we have problems in these discussions and negotiations, we will go to some intermediaries.”

Palkin also suggested that his club may seek legal recourse if the North London club do not play ball.

Asked who those intermediaries would be, he added: “I don’t know yet. Maybe the European Club Association or CAS (Court of Arbitration for Sport). It depends. If they are friendly and we agree, then this issue is closed. It’s better to do it in a friendly way.”

Why Shakhtar may have a hard time convincing Spurs to pay compensation

One factor which could affect any agreement between the parties is the fact that Shakhtar held those talks regarding Solomon with a different leadership group at Tottenham, headed by Daniel Levy.

There have been huge changes to the Spurs’ top brass since then, and it is unclear if the current hierarchy will feel indebted due to a verbal promise made by the club’s former chairman.

Tottenham would also argue that while they may have signed Solomon on a free, they covered his wages for a large part of his three-year spell at the club, even though the winger was often injured and unavailable.

Former referee gives Bentancur red card verdict, but should Luke Shaw have gone too?

Bharad Thirumalai

Tue 13 October 2026 16:30, UK

Former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher has given his assessment of Rodrigo Bentancur’s red card in Tottenham’s 1-1 draw at Old Trafford.

Bentancur, who came on as a substitute on 66 minutes, was sent off just five minutes after United opened the scoring through Bryan Mbeumo.

The Tottenham midfielder made two full-blooded challenges before being shoved to the ground by Luke Shaw.

The Uruguayan got up and leaned in with his head towards the United left-back, with the referee deeming it to be violent conduct and brandishing a red card.

However, Roberto De Zerbi was not too disappointed with Bentancur for losing his head, with the Tottenham boss feeling that the red card sparked a reaction from his side, which eventually led to the Lilywhites’ stoppage-time equaliser.

Dermot Gallagher insists Tottenham’s red card was the correct decision

Spurs legend Graham Roberts blasted Stuart Attwell for his decision, questioning why Shaw stayed on the pitch despite starting the altercation with Bentancur.

Roberts said: “I hope Howard Webb comes out and apologises to Tottenham regarding the referee and explains why he never sent Luke Shaw off.

“If you lift your hands to someone’s body and face, that is a red card by the law. But he will hide and say nothing. Rodrigo Bentancur should have stayed down, but Stuart Attwell is always against us every time we have him.”

However, Dermot Gallagher believes that the decision to send the Spurs midfielder off was a straightforward one, insisting that he has not encountered too many people who disagree with the call.

The former referee said on Sky Sports Ref Watch: “I think it’s a red card. I haven’t spoken to many people who think it isn’t. I just wonder if it could have been avoided.

“That tackle (Bentancur sliding on Shaw) has got to be punished. If you give a free-kick for that, it all goes away. What follows, though, I think it’s a red card.”

Jay Bothroyd believes Luka Shaw’s actions were more dangerous than Bentancur’s

Former Cardiff City striker Jay Bothroyd felt that Bentancur was out of control when he went flying in for a challenge prior to the altercation with Shaw.

He opined that the Tottenham midfielder deserved a booking just for the challenge, but added that Shaw’s push on Bentancur was more dangerous than the Spurs man’s headbutt.

Bothroyd added: “If Bentancur was closer to the sideline, he could have hurt himself, which would be dangerous play. That first Bentancur challenge should definitely be a booking. He’s left the floor; he’s out of control. It’s an aggressive challenge.

“But by the letter of the law, as soon as you put your head in someone’s face, you’re gonna get a red card. But I would say Shaw’s push is more dangerous than Bentancur’s. If he’s close enough to the touchline, he’s flying into them boards. If any of those two challenges catch Shaw, he’s coming off the pitch injured.”

Tottenham make progress on new Luca Williams-Barnett contract amid growing transfer interest

Bharad Thirumalai

Tue 13 October 2026 16:00, UK

Tottenham Hotspur starlet Luca Williams-Barnett is now on the radar of several top clubs around Europe as he continues to demonstrate that he is too good for youth football.

Many Spurs fans are surprised that the 18-year-old has still not been handed his Premier League debut this season, and the situation has attracted the attention of other top clubs.

Over recent days, a number of sources have claimed that some of the biggest clubs in England and Germany are exploring moves for Williams-Barnett.

It was suggested by The Sun over the weekend that Spurs could offer the young attacking midfielder a new contract in an effort to secure his future, and it appears that the Lilywhites are wasting no time doing so.

Contract talks between Tottenham and Luca Williams-Barnett have progressed

Football Insider have now become the latest outlet to confirm that clubs like Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund are chasing the Spurs academy graduate.

However, it is made clear that Tottenham rate Williams-Barnett extremely highly and have no desire to lose him anytime soon. They are now desperately trying to fend off the growing interest in the player.

As a result, Williams-Barnett is now in line for a new deal at Spurs, just a year after signing his first professional contract at Hotspur Way.

In fact, the website adds that sources from Tottenham say that the club are ‘already making progress towards a new deal’ for the 18-year-old.

Why Roberto De Zerbi has not handed Williams-Barnett his league debut yet

Football Insider explained that Roberto De Zerbi has approached the attacking midfielder’s development with caution and remains reluctant to throw him into a struggling team.

The belief of the Italian and many at Spurs is that giving Williams-Barnett an opportunity in the current environment will do more harm than good for the youngster, especially given that the club are under plenty of scrutiny at the moment.

However, the report adds that Tottenham have every intention to tie the midfielder down to a new deal and are hoping to hand him some league minutes once their form improves.

Tottenham are set to face stiff competition in their pursuit of Real Madrid starlet Endrick, with Aston Villa joining the January race.

Tottenham Hotspur certainly need to bolster their attack in the winter transfer window given the lack of depth at the striker position.

At present, Dominic Solanke stands as the only recognised striker at the club, with Richarlison not registered to play in the Premier League after a falling out with the club.

While Omar Marmoush can cover in that role, the Egyptian has yet to make a mark, having failed to score in the Premier League for Tottenham when deployed as a centre-forward.

Tottenham linked with Real Madrid striker Endrick

Reports suggest Tottenham are considering a centre-forward this winter, and as a result the Lilywhites have been linked with several names, including Endrick of Real Madrid.

The young forward has struggled for game time this season under Jose Mourinho, which has led to speculation about a move away, with Spurs touted as a potential destination.

However, Tottenham are set to face competition, with Football Insider reporting that Aston Villa have entered the race for the striker.

Villa were keen on a loan move in the summer but missed out, though they could return again in January.

Pete O’Rourke explained: “If Endrick does become available in the January transfer window, there’ll be a number of clubs who would be interested in the Brazilian.

“He’s struggled for minutes under José Mourinho this season, just four minutes in the first team as a substitute in one of the games, and obviously he is well down the pecking order.

“It does seem that Aston Villa are very much interested in Endrick if he becomes available, and they could look to sign him in January.

“Real obviously allowed him to go out on loan last year where he really caught fire for Lyon and maybe they’ll be open to doing that again.

“If he does become available in the January window there’ll be a lot of clubs willing to take the Brazilian on loan, so I think it’ll be a pretty open race for his signature.”

Spurs also tracking Igor Matanovic

Competition would certainly make it harder for Spurs to land Endrick, but not impossible. During the last winter window, Tottenham showed they were capable of landing their top targets, signing Sandro Tonali, Mateus Fernandes and Marcos Senesi despite competition from elsewhere.

This time, however, Endrick is not the only forward on Spurs’ radar, with Igor Matanovic also being closely monitored. Manchester United are also keen on the Freiburg striker.

However, unlike Endrick, Matanovic has had regular game time, playing eight matches this season and scoring six goals while providing two assists.

Football Insider reports that Real Madrid are now weighing up Endrick’s future and could be willing to let him leave on loan in January.
