Newcastle United suffered a 4-1 defeat at Premier League rivals Coventry City on Monday night.
Newcastle United’s 4-1 defeat at the hands of newly-promoted Coventry City shows there is ‘an awful lot of hard work to be done’ for Magpies head coach Matthias Jaissle.
That was the verdict of former United stalwart John Anderson as he assessed what became a frustrating evening at the CBS Arena as the hosts racked up for their home win in just over quarter of a century. The tone was set in the early stages of the game as Jack Rudoni fired home from the penalty spot after Lukas Hornicek had upended Sky Blues striker Sidiki Cherif.

Newcastle wasted chances to get back on level-terms with summer signing Matias Fernandez-Pardo the chief culprit as he saw two goalbound efforts blocks when he had been well-placed to grab an equaliser. Cherif doubled the hosts lead three minutes after the restart before Newcastle seemed to have been handed a route back into the game with a stunning strike from defender Sven Botman.
However, substitutes Ellis Simms and Stephen Mfuni both found the net inside the final ten minutes to take Frank Lampard’s side out of sight and leave an impressive band of travelling support to air their understandable frustration.
Anderson believes the result shows where Newcastle are as they embark on their first season under Jaissle - and warned the manner of the defeat should show how much work there is lying ahead.
He told BBC Newcastle: "We spoke about what we are. There's going to be ups, there's going to be downs, it's going to be one of those seasons. We were well beaten at Leeds, deserved to be well beaten at Leeds. Leeds were by far the better side.
“I don't think the 4-1 scoreline is probably a true reflection of how the game has gone tonight but that just shows where we are. We had the opportunity. Fourth was there to be grabbed. I said beforehand it's still early doors but it would have made nice reading seeing a Champions League spot, unfortunately it wasn't to be and there's still an awful lot of hard work to be done.”
