Jamie Carrgher has criticised Man United defender Lisandro Martinez after he spoke out against the club's board. The 28-year-old gave an explosive interview following the club's 2-0 Champions League defeat against Atletico Madrid.

He took aim at techinical director Jason Wilcox and claimed that there should have been more investment into the squad during the latest transfer window. The comments have prompted a big reaction from both fans and pundits, with Carragher the latest to have his say.

Giving his reaction on CBS Sports, he said: "It doesn't do anybody any good at all and they will be the story now for the next few days, all about this. As supporters, every set of supporters don't like the suits or the guys upstairs, so United fans will lap this up and think it's great.

"I think it's awful that he's come out and said that. When he's saying 'we had a fantastic season last season', they didn't, a manager got sacked last season. They finished third because they had no cup games, they weren't in Europe, got knocked out of the cup competitions very early.

"The reason they finished third was because Liverpool and Chelsea were that bad as well. Now we're seeing the real Manchester United this season.

"The reason they didn't buy players in the summer is because in the last four or five years that Martinez has been there, I think they've been in the Champions League once, this season, once. So for every season you don't get Champions League money, and every season Manchester United spending £200 million in the transfer market, sooner or later it has to stop, because the money is not there.

"So this summer, the money Manchester United are paying out, it's for players they bought years ago, the next installment of it, that's why there isn't that money there, you can't just keep going with it. There's a squad of players with different managers, they've been awful, they were awful again tonight.

"And him (Martinez), when he's talking at the start of this season, I think he's a good player by the way, he's a World Cup winner, I get that, he's had an awful start to the season, awful, really poor. Yeah, people will lap it up, Manchester United fans will, that does nnobody any good at all."

Carragher also added that Martinez should instead be protecting people at the club, comparing football clubs to 'a family', adding: "It's funny when players say that, they never talk about their own positions. Whenever a player goes 'we haven't done enough in the transfer window', he won't mean centre-back, he'll mean other areas of the pitch.

"So the players who came in in the summer, how do you think they feel when he's saying that now. This is not just me having a go at a Man United player.

"Last year, Ruben Amorim went for the people above him last season, and I said straight away he should be sacked, not just because of those comments. I was saying 'you're lucky to still be in a job, you can't be having a go at the people above you'.

"I think your football club's a family and there is a lot of stuff going on inside it, people are arguing, they're not happy with this. I can understand he might not be happy with the squad, or Michael Carrick not, but as a football club.

"As a family, we all know with our brothers, sisiters, mums and dads, aunties and uncles they'll be problems and someone who doesn't like someone and people fall out here and there, but when you go through that front door you put a united front on, you protect each other.

"I think your football club is like that, and I hated it a Liverpool if anyone was speaking out of turn or having a go at the manager or the manager was having a go at the board. We're supposed to be as one, it might be a bit of an act, but you have to put that act on as families do and as football clubs do.

"This will be the talk of the town from now, this will blow up, explode and I think he's out of order."

Carragher's comments echo that of Wayne Rooney, who also criticised Martinez for the interview. "I think Martinez was very premeditated," he said.

"Why is he doing the interview after this game? Has he put himself forward, I very rarely hear him speak.

"It looked a bit premeditated and something he spoke about with his team to get out there. It's sad because when you need everyone to stick together as players, you can't be told what's going on above you.

"So you need them players, the manager, the coaching staff to stick together when you're having a difficult time; otherwise, something like that will rip a dressing room apart.

"I think it's a bit disrespectful to his team-mates as well because he's disrespecting his team-mates, he's saying they're not good enough. So he's saying his team-mates aren't good enough, so it's disrespectful."
