Sassuolo sporting director Francesco Palmieri has reflected on the ‘big deal’ to sell Tarik Muharemovic to Leeds United, also telling Juventus his side did the Bianconeri a favour with the transfer.

In an attempt to keep their defensive depth intact following the departure of Pascal Struijk for Brighton & Hove Albion, the Whites spent €34m to sign Muharemovic from Sassuolo.

Juventus were considering signing Muharemovic, who they held a 50 per cent sell-on clause on, but ultimately passed on using it to secure a big discount and he joined Leeds.

Leeds’ big fee for Muharemovic meant Juventus ended up banking €17m.

The Italian giants have already been told they have made a massive mistake in not snapping up Muharemovic, but Palmeiri thinks Sassuolo did the Bianconeri a favour.

He stressed that there were many enquiries about Muharemovic, with the deal ultimately proving to be a lucrative one for both Sassuolo and the Bosnia international.

He told Italian outlet Tutto Mercato Web: “A big deal, twice over. Because it was already a big deal when we signed him from Juventus two years ago.

“This summer, I found myself with a lot of enquiries for a very strong player, who I’m convinced can grow even further.

“It was a very important deal, profitable for the player but also for us: no team in Italy had shown much interest, while several clubs abroad were interested.

“It’s nice to close a deal like this. And we also did Juventus a favour.”

Muharemovic has already made a huge impression at Elland Road and Leeds fans have had little cause to regret the club’s sale of Struijk.

It has been suggested in some quarters that a number of European giants are now tracking Muharemovic and Leeds could find themselves having to deal with offers for him sooner than they would ideally like to.

Daniel Farke will hope that Muharemovic can continue his hugely encouraging start to the campaign, with real excitement at Elland Road this season over what the Whites could potentially achieve.
