Ipswich Town’s academy sides had mixed fortunes on the night as the U21S staged a stunning comeback win on the road, but the U18’s fell to penalty shootout disappointment in the Suffolk FA Premier Cup.

John McGreal’s youngsters rallied from an early setback to record their first National League Cup win of the season, while the U18’s were left wondering what might have been when conceding a late equaliser before losing from the spot against Walsham-le-Willows

U21’s Display Spirit to Best Worthing

They’ve not always been a true reflection of the Ipswich U21S’ performances in the past. As such, Town’s 2-1 victory on the road over Worthing was all the better for Ipswich Town who had the stronger start and should have found themselves further ahead with goals after six minutes from Emmerson Sutton.

Instead of being disheartened, the Young Blues fought back into the game and were rewarded with a leveller goal just before the break as Shakil Nicolaou equalised two minutes before the interval to leave both sides as equals heading into the interval.

Just on the hour mark, Luca Fletcher was awarded with a fine save to see him win possession before finishing brilliantly into the top corner to complete a remarkable turnaround to seal all three points.

It’ll see Town climb to third in the National League Cup group and set them up nicely for the games to come.

Barrett in the Goalkeeper’s Net

One notable inclusion in the starting line-up came from goalkeeper George Barrett. The former Walsall youngster had his loan cut short at Braintree Town, despite the deal being due to run right to the end of January.

His return offered up an immediate chance to gain valuable minutes, and he played his part in helping Town find all three points. With competition for places fierce across the academy, Barrett’s return gives experience with added depth to McGreal’s side.

Emotional Evening for the U18’s

Whilst the U21’s celebrated their comeback, the U18’s endured a far from enjoyable evening of football. Before kick-off there was a minute’s silence in memory of former academy player Kaylem Scopes, who passed away following a battle with leukaemia.

It was an emotional occasion for all who were associated with the academy and one which inevitably added extra weight to the fixture. Once the game kicked off, it saw Town creating some good chances.

Chris Atherton, who joined the Blues from Chelsea, continues to impress and was heavily involved throughout, providing much of Ipswich’s attack. The midfielder was at the heart of several dangerous moments in the first half and remained one of Town’s more exciting players after the break.

Encouraging Signs Across the Academy

Whilst the results were mixed, there were plenty of positives that could be taken from both matches.

The U21’s displayed a lot of spirit and character to come from behind and win the match, with Fletcher’s important contribution and Nicolaou’s equaliser showing how much attacking potential the club has.

Meanwhile, despite the inevitable disappointment of falling to the inevitable out, the U18’s once again showed periods of excellent performances, showing why Atherton is being seen one of the academy’s most exciting prospects.

One will look to build upon a welcome victory, while the other can find positives from a night full of frustration. Together, it was another busy chapter in the continued development of Ipswich Town’s next generation.
