Enquiry made: Man Utd among frontrunners to sign 'powerful full-back'

Manchester United have made an enquiry about Benfica right-back Daniel Banjaqui, according to Wednesday’s print edition of Portuguese newspaper O jogo.

Diogo Dalot and Noussair Mazraoui have not been entirely convincing as United’s right-backs which could explain their interest in Banjaqui.

Several clubs are also interested in the defender. United are reportedly leading the race alongside Newcastle United, Barcelona and Inter Milan.

The Mancunian giants and the other leading suitors are said to have been impressed by his ‘technical and physical quality’.

Banjaqui came through Benfica’s academy. He made his professional debut in December 2025, coming on as a substitute in the 2–0 victory over Farense in the Taca de Portugal.

The 18-year-old is yet to establish himself as a regular in Benfica’s first team, making just six appearances across all competitions.

Banjaqui, described as a ‘powerful full-back‘ by The Guardian, signed a new contract with Benfica in April with a €80 million (£67m) release clause.

However, O jogo claim the Eagles are willing to consider offers between €35m (£29m) and €40m (£34m) for the Portugal youth international.

United are unlikely to meet Benfica’s valuation given Banjaqui’s limited senior experience.

The Red Devils are also poised to give priority to strengthening at left-back. Newcastle United’s Lewis Hall remains a top target having failed to sign him last summer.

That said, Man United should target Brentford’s Michael Kayode over Banjaqui if they decide to sign a new right-back.

Kayode has proven himself in the Premier League and has the potential to become one of Europe’s finest right-footed full-backs.

The Italy international could be more expensive than Banjaqui, having recently signed a new contract with Brentford.
