Nicolas Jackson: Aston Villa win more important than my goals

The striker was impressive as Unai Emery’s men broke a record at Villa Park.

Nicolas Jackson claimed winning was more important than scoring a hat-trick after his brace helped Villa thrash Fenerbahce in the Champions League.

The Senegal international continued his impressive start to life at Villa with a first half double to set Unai Emery’s men on course to a 6-0 win, the club’s biggest-ever in European competition.

But the former Chelsea man was denied the chance of a treble when Ross Barkley stepped up to take a second half penalty, after Johan Manzambi was brought down in the box.

Jackson later conceded he had wanted to take the spot-kick but added: “The most important thing is we win. Hopefully next time I'll get the hat-trick.

“Today was very important as we had not won at home.”

The 25-year-old has now scored five goals in eight appearances since joining in a deal worth an initial £47.5million.

He scored twice in the space of eight first half minutes after another of Villa’s summer buys, Johan Manzambi, had celebrated his 21st birthday by opening the scoring.

Tammy Abraham finished the scoring in the 90th minute after Barkley’s second half brace, as Villa recorded their first home win of the season and continued their perfect start to the Champions League campaign.

Explaining why the midfielder took the penalty, Emery explained: "We have our plan with the penalty shooter, and today was the responsibility to shoot was for Ross Barkley.

“We have to be so demanding as well there, because here we had some moments during the four years I am here.

"Sometimes we were missing some very important penalties, and now Ross Barkley has a high average scoring goals.

"We have this analysis, and today was clear. But of course, Jackson is doing a fantastic job, fantastic task.

"He's scoring, he's working defensively, fantastic as well, helping the team.

"This is very important and maybe in the future he can shoot as well when we have a penalty shot. It could be in cases like that a good opportunity to score for him."

Villa have won two matches out of two to start the league phase and are back at home when they host Viking, after Saturday’s Premier League trip to Newcastle.

“We are delighted for the first win at home, we needed it,” said Emery. “This is the most important thing about tonight.

“We achieved the first win at home and how we could manage with different players.

“I think a lot of very good things happened through the good result and giving us confidence and making us as well demanding to keep it for the next matches.”
