Opinion: Aston Villa dribbling maestro earned more than Tammy Abraham's 'thanks' vs Fenerbahce

Wednesday night saw Unai Emery's side resume their Champions League campaign against the Turkish giants.

After beating Club Brugge in the opening game of the league phase, the Villains were looking to keep pace at the top at Villa Park.

Not only are they keeping pace, alongside Paris Saint-Germain and Barcelona, Villa are setting it after Fenerbahce were routed 6-0.

Nicolas Jackson and Ross Barkley both bagged braces, whilst Johan Manzambi netted his second goal in Villa colours too.

The sixth and final goal of the evening was scored by Abraham, and he wasted no time in lauding praise on the architect behind it.

What did Tammy Abraham say to Alysson?

Neither Abraham nor Alysson started Wednesday night's Champions League tie, but both came off the bench in the second half.

Alysson was introduced after 73 minutes in place of Boubacar Kamara, whilst Abraham was afforded the final 11 minutes, replacing Jackson.

It didn't give either player much of a chance to make an impact on the game, but they still found a way to get in on the action.

After skilfully moving past the Fenerbahce defender down the right, Alysson fizzed the ball across the six-yard box to meet the waiting Abraham.

The 29-year-old scored one of the easiest goals he'll ever score, helping the ball into the unguarded net from two yards out.

After the game, Alysson took to his Instagram account to mark the result, saying: "(translated) Special evening of UCL!!"

In the comments underneath, Abraham made sure to honour the Brazilian, saying: "Thank you bro," with a kissing emoji.

With that being Abraham's first goal in a month, thanks were definitely in order, but just how good was Alysson's cameo from the bench?

Where Alysson was perfect in Aston Villa vs Fenerbahce

Despite making nine appearances in all competitions this season, Alysson has only played 91 minutes of Premier League football in 2026-27.

His five league outings have culminated in zero starts, but Emery needs to change that as proven by his performance against Fenerbahce.

The sign of a top player is their ability to impact games regardless of how little time they get on the pitch, and Alysson did that on Wednesday.

Per FotMob, the 20-year-old completed all three of his pass attempts accurately, as well as creating two chances and one big chance.

He also was successful with all three of his dribbles, won three of his five ground duels, made two recoveries and one interception.

Despite only touching the ball eight times, Alysson used those to complete dribbles, provide an assist for a goal and play accurate passes.

Competition is rife down Villa's wings, but if Alysson can't find himself rewarded via way of a Premier League start after that, when will he?
