As Juventus prepare to face Celta Vigo in the Europa League, Oscar Mingueza could have been returning to Spain to face his former club had his transfer plans worked out differently. The defender was reportedly among the players considered by the Bianconeri during the summer transfer window.

Mingueza had established himself as one of La Liga’s leading defenders in recent seasons and chose not to renew his contract at Celta Vigo. His representatives subsequently explored the market to find him a new club, with several teams potentially interested in securing his services.

Juventus explored a move for Mingueza

Juventus were among the clubs that approached the defender, and discussions reportedly took place about bringing him to Turin. However, the proposed move did not materialise, and Mingueza instead joined Crystal Palace in the Premier League as he began a new chapter in his career.

The Bianconeri ultimately strengthened their defence by signing Jhon Lucumi during the last transfer window. Although Mingueza could also have been an option for the Bianconeri, the club pursued a different route as it worked to improve the squad.

With Juventus now preparing to meet Celta Vigo in Europe, the earlier interest in Mingueza has resurfaced. Luciano Spalletti acknowledged that the club had explored the possibility of signing the defender during the summer.

Spalletti confirms transfer discussions

Speaking via Tuttomercatoweb, the Juventus manager discussed the club’s wider recruitment efforts and addressed the reports linking them with Mingueza.

“Our directors have explored the transfer market far and wide. There was probably something true about Mingueza. In Celta there are several players we can play in European football.”

Spalletti’s comments suggest that Mingueza was among the players considered as Juventus assessed potential reinforcements. However, the discussions did not lead to a deal, leaving the defender to pursue his career in England while Juventus moved forward with their own defensive plans.

Juventus will now focus on the challenge posed by Celta Vigo. The Bianconeri have added Lucumi to their squad and will hope their current options can deliver the performances needed as they continue their European campaign.
