Anthony Elanga has been one of Newcastle United’s most significant absentees in recent weeks after suffering a hamstring injury in training before the defeat at Leeds United.
Daily Mail’s Craig Hope reported on Wednesday a major improvement in the winger’s recovery, with Elanga entering the final stages of his rehabilitation and potentially returning in the coming weeks.
“Confidential understands the 24-year-old is now in the final stages of his rehab and there is hope he will return from his hamstring layoff in the coming weeks,” Hope reported.
Elanga suffered the injury before Newcastle’s Sept. 14 trip to Leeds, with the initial concerns heightened after Matthias Jaissle admitted the problem did not look good. According to Hope, multiple scans subsequently raised fears the Sweden international could miss as much as two months.
That outlook has now improved considerably, even though his return isn’t imminent.
“The word in recent days is that the Swede has made significant progress and could rejoin training shortly,” Hope reported.
Elanga played a major role in Newcastle’s three-game unbeaten start to the Premier League season before the injury. Jaissle’s side has since lost two of its next three league matches without him.
